Myrtle Beach Attractions – Brookgreen Gardens

Fall weather means more than just diminished crowds in the Myrtle Beach area. It also means that it is time to get out and enjoy the gorgeous Grand Strand weather! Temperatures during autumn hover between 60 – 80 degrees through October - creating the ideal environment for enjoying all of the wonderful outdoor attractions in the area. One attraction in particular is an absolute “must” on your fall vacation list – Brookgreen Gardens. Located just south of Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, Brookgreen Gardens is an outdoor sculpture garden and zoo that offers something for everyone.

Recently named one of the top ten best public gardens in the US, Brookgreen offers almost 1,000 acres of lush landscaped gardens scattered with handcrafted works of art. Many gardens are themed, like the Fountain of the Muses, and the landscaping reflects the art. Popular gardens include the Live Oak Allee, which features ancient Oak trees delicately draped with Spanish moss, The Arboretum, and the Palmetto Garden. Each area features plants that are maintained throughout the year in addition to many seasonal blooms.

Animal lovers in the group will love the critters kept at the Lowcountry Zoo. As the only zoo accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in the Carolinas, the Lowcountry Zoo provides a home for a variety of native animals. These animals were either injured or born in captivity and would not be able to survive in the wild. You can look forward to seeing everything from alligators, bald eagles, and river otters to marsh tacky horses, Spanish goats, and great blue herons. This Myrtle Beach zoo is great for young ones and adults alike!

Depending on what time of year you are in town, you might be lucky enough to attend one of Brookgreen Garden’s exciting events. They host a variety of concerts throughout the year, like the popular Beach Boys Tribute Band that played earlier in September. In October, they are hosting a fundraiser called Brew in The Zoo which features several craft beer vendors, gourmet food, and live entertainment. Their most popular event is the Night of a Thousand Candles, a month long celebration in December that illuminates the gardens with thousands of soft holiday lights. No matter what time of year it is, be sure to check and see what Brookgreen Gardens has going on.

Brookgreen Gardens is the Myrtle Beach area’s premier outdoor attraction and a truly one of a kind experience. Take advantage of the gorgeous fall weather by perusing the landscaped avenues of the gardens and learning more about native animals. You can also enjoy lunch at the café and take back a local souvenir at the gift shop. Perfect for an afternoon outing or a day full of exploration, make sure a trip to Brookgreen Gardens is on your Myrtle Beach vacation itinerary!
